What to Do When Your Nanowrimo Project Feels Overwhelming

I hope you had a good weekend. It was CRAZY warm here, (in the 70s) so we dove into a long-awaited project…replacing our sad 3-season storm windows with insulated 4 season windows to upgrade our sunroom (officially the LAST inside remodel project!)

If you’re wondering…it’s this room.

Which now looks like this..

My husband went to bed at 8pm last night. “My whole body hurts,” he said. Poor guy. He’s a champ. But I get it. The work seems UNENDING. (in other news…we are ALMOST done.)

Sort of like your NaNoWriMo project feels right now.

Right about now, Chapter 9 of my book (which is where I am) I start saying…what is this dumb book about anyway? Are my characters even likeable? Is this story ever going to have a happy ending?

The ending feels WAAAAY far away, foggy and almost impossible.

When I get like this, here’s what I say to myself.

Take a breath, Susie. You knew it would be hard. But it is worth the journey.

Now, you’ll just have to dig in a bit more. What do your character REALLY want—that deeper thing below their initial wants. Why are they on this journey NOW? What have they learned so far?

And now…what is the tough thing (emotionally or physically) that is ahead. How will they tackle it.

Don’t think about the fog. Just take the next step.

(I tried those questions with hubs but he was already asleep.)

My best advice for right now? Keep your head down and keep typing. You will get to the end. And then you can go back and fix it.

So, to sum up the success strategies.

  • Plan your work sessions
  • Ask your TEAM to help pick up the slack
  • Focus on the Foundation
  • Keep your head down and keep writing

I leave you with this quote I got today.

“From what you GET you can only make a living, it is only by what you GIVE that you make a Life”Sadhguru (p.s, I don’t know the quoter, but I liked the quote)

A great story requires pieces of yourself. Digging. Revelation and vulnerability. But in that, you bless the world. Which is why, of course, your story matters.

Go, write something brilliant today.

XO!
