Why it’s okay to be afraid

I saw a meme the other day.

It’s sorta of (*ahem, a lot) true for novelists, right? We actually need quarantine to get our jobs done.

Long hours of quiet to think, create and talk to ourselves.

I have to admit, however, that I am not hating having my workspace invaded.

Today’s office staff:

Imma be honest.

Being in a time of challenge is not a terrible thing for your faith. I remember numerous times when we lived in Russia when we prayed for toilet paper, or hotdogs (so not kidding), when we, as ex-pat Americans were ordered into our homes for our own safety (e.g. during the bombing of Kosovo and after 9-11) and the time our children got dangerously ill and we thought they might die for lack of medical care.

Wow, did I pray. I clung to the Lord, praying the Psalms, devoured the Word and filled my home with scripture reminders.

My need for help forced me into the arms of Jesus, and my faith grew deep roots.

It’s these deep roots that not only helped me survive…but bear fruit in the future. So many of my characters’ journeys are pulled from those times (and other, even more recent).

I guess, all I’m saying is…I know you’re feeling overwhelmed. Scared. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring. But we DO have a God who is in charge, and who loves us. He is NOT out of control. And, if you dig in deep, He will use this for good in your lives.

Read Psalm 33 today. Let the words soak into your soul:

Can I offer a suggestion?

Get a journal and start recording your fears, your prayers and the small ways you see God answer. Your stories will be stronger for it.

Every day for the next two weeks, we’re posting encouraging devotionals over at https://www.facebook.com/groups/mybooktherapy/. And we’re praying for you.

The world needs people who are not afraid…people who know where to look for answers.

Your story matters. Especially the one you live out today with the people in your office.

With love,

Susie May
