How to get to the top

Summer!!!! Okay I don’t have kids in school anymore, (My last kid graduated from college three weeks ago, so maybe now I’m permanently on summer break!) but habits die hard and we did our post-school thing and took off for vacation last week.

Since it was a graduation celebration, (and because we got a insane travel deal—checkout Groupon Getaways!) we went to Germany on a CASTLE TOUR.

Like this one.

And this one.

And finally, this one. (do you know what movie this castle is featured in?)

Of course, that last one HAD to be on top of a hill.

That we had to climb.

And climb.

And climb.

About half-way up, as we were huffing, I decided to make it a teachable moment.

Because, apparently that’s what I do.

Pete was my nearest victim (he stayed behind with his mom, like a gentleman, to make sure I got to the top).

“Pete,” I said. “Do you know the story of the 20 mile march?”

I’m not sure what he said, so I sallied-forth. “In 1910, two explorers set out to reach the North Pole. One a British explorer, decided to travel only when the weather was good. When it was bad, the expedition rested in their tents, but sometimes, they traveled up to 40 miles a day. The other explorer, a Norwegian, determined to travel 20 miles a day, no more, no less, regardless of weather. One team made it, and one team died. Which one made it?”

Pete gave me a look. (It might have been accompanied by an eye-roll. I’m not sure, as the sweat from my brow was blinding me.) “The British team?”

“Nope!” (okay, that might have been accompanied by too much glee. See, your mother does know cool stuff!) “It was the Norwegian team, led by Roald Amundsen. Why? Because there aren’t enough good days! Success is achieved by consistency.”

Right about then, we reached the top. But here’s the moral of the story: If you have the skills, and the right information (e.g. a MAP!) then simply apply consistency and you’ll reach your goal. Finish a book. Finish the house remodel. Climb the castle walls.

Get to the view.

I’m back from vacation, and ready to dive into my Summer Fun. Which includes writing every day. But it also includes learning writing skills (as well as reading some excellent novels). Just a step forward every day.

(BTW, We’ve included this 20 mile march concept in our 2020 Brilliant Writing Planner. I can’t wait to show it to you!! oh, you need a planner for summer, you say? No problem–ours is insanely discounted, the perfect friend to rock your summer plans!)

In the meantime, what is your 20 mile march for the summer? What consistency will you build in, maybe in your mornings, or your afternoons, (during nap time! Hey, even teenagers need a nap!) to accomplish your goals, one step at a time?

The view at the top awaits. Let’s rock this summer writing thing!

Your Story Matters. Go, write something brilliant!

PS – Oh, do I have a deal for you!!! I’m always on the lookout for new tools to hone my skills as a writer (and as an indie publisher).
