Showers of Creativity, Part Three: Develop Your Creativity

Hopefully, over these last couple of weekends, you’ve discovered and embraced your area of creative genius. There’s no greater feeling than knowing you are operating in your areas of giftedness.

The question now is do you want to make the greatest impact you possibly can in the world? If so, you need to use your time and resources pursuing those things. In other words, I’m not gifted in the area of voice. I can sometimes carry a tune… if that tune is in a book that I’m moving from one room to the other. My contribution to the world will not be in song. So, if I really, truly want to make a difference, it simply would be a waste of time for me to take voice lessons.

I’m not suggesting you not pursue things you love to do, like go to the movies with friends or have family over for dinner. Not at all. But I am saying that in order to be the best you can possibly be in your area of giftedness, you must spend the time and money to develop it.

You obviously believe you are a gifted writer, so let’s stick with that. Here are a few things you can do right away that will get you well on your way to carving out your contribution in the world.

Jump in. Find those who successfully write your genre and study them. What are their work habits? What challenges have they faced in their writer’s journey? What wisdom have they gained that will help you avoid pitfalls?

Do your homework. Research the conferences, retreats and other gatherings that will get you where you want to be. Determine what the costs will be and plan to save so you will be able to attend, perhaps not this year but next year or the year after. The point is to make plans to attend and give yourself the best teaching available to get you where you want to be as quickly as possible.

Read! I can’t overemphasize this. Those who have made it to where you want to be have written about it. Allow for the purchase of books in your budget. Even if it takes you six months to save enough pennies to purchase a twelve dollar paperback, you’re doing something for you and your giftedness.

You’ll be surprised how doing these three things immediately will open doors to your creativity that you did not know were there. Inhibitions will fade into insignificance as you begin developing your giftedness. You will create a whole new world of joy and fulfillment. And, even when you’re doing those chores like laundry and vacuuming, you’ll discover creative ways to do those as well.
