The unexpected gift of saying YES

I admit, I was pretty wrung out on Friday night. I’d written about 18K in three days and my brain was soggy, a limp noodle, void of any creative vim.

Worse, I’d planned to write all weekend, to catch up in a self-imposed deadline, but I had nothin’.

And then I got an email from a couple of friends we’d hadn’t talked to in years. They had a couple extra tickets to that night’s REND Collective concert. I love REND Collective—think Mumford and Sons gone Christian. With deep, poignant, resonant worship, and songs that will sit in your soul. (Listen to their version of You are My Vision here).

I wasn’t going to say yes. I was tired, hubs was tired, and we were leaning toward PJs and Pizza.

But I felt the nudge. Hmmm…okay, yes.

The name of the concert: The Good News tour. HELLO. The Good News that we have a champion. That we don’t have to be overwhelmed, lost, alone or wordless. They have a song on the album called, Weep With Me, a lament of David (here), and one of the lyric is: What is true in the light is still true in the dark.

Amen. #Truth. Good is Good. He is with us. He is our Rescuer (also another fabulous song)

Are you at the end of your creative rope?

I recently got a letter from a student who had a fantastic story idea, but ended her letter with, “I’m not sure I’m good enough to write it.”

Good, because that’s exactly the qualification you need to write an amazing book.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10).

God wants to do good works in our lives. But what will stop me from experiencing those good works? When I rely on my own power, my own resources, my own talents.

David Pierce from Steiger International preached this weekend at our church and he said this: “We were all created for significance. But God intentionally put his resurrection power in weak vessels so he will get the glory. He loves to use ordinary, people not impressed with themselves to reach a world desperate to know him.”

Whoa.

God calls WEAK PEOPLE, like me. People with five small, measly loaves and a couple dried out fish, willing to offer it up to him. (Matthew 14: 13-21)

And, more, God chose the small, lowly and weak to show Himself, to the world. Through YOU.

Sit and think about that for a minute.

You matter. Your story matters. You just need to show up with your fish and loaves and say YES.

Are you ready to say YES to God? To Him doing the work in you? To HIM being in charge of your story? Your significance? Because that’s all you need.

Good. Now go, write something brilliant!
