Conference season is upon us! One of the big ones for novelists is the American Christian Fiction Writers conference held in September. Conferences are not cheap, but they are a good investment in your writing career. Let me give you a few reasons why.
- A conference is a great way to meet the people in the industry. There’s something about being in a place with likeminded people that’s very inspiring. Many writers happen to be introverts, but it’s not difficult to strike up a conversation with a simple question: “What are you writing?” You might find your next critique partner or writer BFF.
- Who better to learn from than seasoned authors? Conferences offer workshops and classes from professionals who’ve been there. It’s a great way to hone your skills, learn techniques to improve your writing or learn about the marketing and business side of publishing.
- There are often opportunities for more formal meetings with editors and agents where you can pitch your story or get feedback on your WIP. Come prepared for a short sit-down with a one-sheet and share your passion for your story. Do your research before the meeting to make sure your work is what that agent or editor is looking for.
- various awards. Submit your work for the chance at one of the awards beforehand and honor those that have reached milestones in their career.
- Conferences can be a mini vacation too. Some bring family members and stay longer to explore a new part of the country. You might find fodder for your next story!
Many conferences are a big expense. If you’re not able to afford an in-person event, try applying for scholarships or buying a conference thumb-drive with recordings of the sessions. Virtual conferences or local workshops are often more affordable options too. Check out the Christian Writers Market Guide by Steve Laube for a comprehensive list of conferences.
Whatever you do, keep investing in your writing. Maybe we’ll be celebrating your story at that next awards banquet!
The key to solving a kidnapping…
Lies buried in her past.
After witnessing her aunt’s abduction, veterinarian Talia Knowles will do anything to find her—even as the kidnappers set their sights on her. But missing memories from her past might hold answers she didn’t know she had. And relying on neighboring ranch hand and ex-marine Noah Landers could be the key to finding her aunt and discovering the culprit’s true motives.
