Just when you think they’re not learning anything from Television…

Hey all! It’s going to be a sparse week at MBT – Rachel and I are in Florida, ducking the rainstorms, talking about writing, brainstorming stories…we’ll be posting some pics as the week goes on!

In the meantime, my daughter was home this past week from working at camp, and she feasted on Lois and Clark, the second season.  I’d come downstairs from my office and discover her at three in the afternoon, in her bathroom and Superman pants, digging through the fridge.  She’d swoon and say, Oh, Clark is sooooo cute.  I thought — hey, this isn’t a super productive way to spend your summer…

until she sent me this devotional she wrote before she left again for camp.  She’s 16, but I like the way she thinks.  Here it is — proof that even when your kids are watching “mindless”  TV — they are still thinking…

GOD vs. SUPERMAN

by Sarah May Warren age 16

I am a fan of Superman, I mean, why wouldn’t I be? He’s strong, he’s beautiful, and above all, he’s the good guy. Recently I spent the day watching the old “Lois and Clark” series, where every single a “bad guy” does something bad, and superman fights, and fights, until justice prevails. I began to think to myself: hey, it doesn’t get much better than this — sappy romance, good action, and a great ending every time. But then I realized something…Superman has flaws.

In fact, I discovered major differences between God and Superman.

1. Lois Lane

2. Secret Identity

3. Metropolis

4. Kryptonite

First of all, Superman has Lois Lane, the girl of his dreams that he would do anything for. Hey, what’s wrong with that? Nothing, except that God doesn’t do that God does not favor people — He’s not going to choose Lois over you or me. Acts 10:34-5 says, “Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.” Peter was invited to go to Cornelius’s house, but being a Jew, it was against the law for Peter to associate with Cornelius, a Gentile. But the Lord saw past that and told Cornelius to invite him anyway. God made all men equal, and he loves them all the same.

The second difference is that God has no secret identity. He gave all we ever need to know about him — in His word. All his secrets, all his works, all his stories in one book, that He wrote though his people. God does not hide who He is to protect us like Clark does to protect Lois from villains who might want to thwart his plan because God doesn’t need to, He is almighty. Proverbs 21: 30 says “there is no plan, no wisdom, no insight, that can succeed against the Lord” so why would he need a secret identity?

Third of all, Superman lives in Metropolis, and for the most part, his rescue world is confined there. He doesn’t go to Duluth to save someone from a car accident, he doesn’t quickly zip over to Ukraine to stop an armed robbery. It would be amazing if he did, but that’s what we eventually get the Justice League for, because they can save the whole world. Although Superman can’t do that job alone, God can. “Am I only a God nearby?” declares the Lord “and not a God far away? Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord. He is every where — in China, in Grand Marais, in all the churches, and in the hearts of all his followers.

The final thing that Makes God different from superman is Kryptonite, the stone that weakens Superman. The tool that the villain uses to stop Superman from succeeding. I thought to myself, does God have a weakness? Is there a thing I could ever do to defeat him? Is there anything anyone can do to hurt him? And the truth is no, if there were we would know it, wouldn’t we? In fact, He defeated the one thing that even Superman fears — death.

There is another difference between them, but that comes from my own belief — I believe one exists and the other is a beautiful myth. Look around you, and decide for your self.
