“I have always wanted to write a book, I just don’t have the time.” How many of you have heard that from someone? Just me? Probably not. Because what do Americans never think they have enough of – TIME. What does it take to write a book? Many things but one is for certain – TIME.
We all have the same amount of time – the question is – how will you spend yours?
Am I saying if you want to be a writer you should write all the time? No, in fact, I choose not to write in the summer.
I started writing on a daily schedule when my kids were in kinder, second, and fourth. This past May my oldest graduated and over the past eight summers I have realized that summers aren’t a time for writing. I know it isn’t the same for everyone, but for me, summers are for connecting with my kids, and family, and using the other hours for my daily job.
Could I write? Yes. In fact, I have tried it before. But with the traveling I do it makes it hard to focus, hard to be creative, and hard to get the words on the page. So I started giving myself permission a few years ago to take the time in the summers to NOT write.
And I will add that as I prepare to send my boy off to college, I am so glad I took the time each year to make space for family time.
I know this isn’t possible for writers who are also teachers but if there is anything I have learned on this journey is that all of our journeys are not the same. And that is okay. But if you are a writer you need to find some time to write.
So to take off the summers, I have to be diligent to make sure I write hard the other 10 months of the year. This can be a challenge but using Susan May Warren time blocking paired with her planner has been the solution I need.
If you have never checked it out, now is the time. She just released the 2023-2024 July to July planner. Of course, she will release the regular twelve-month planner in September but for those of us whose year tends to align with the school schedule, it is the perfect solution.
I just ordered mine and I can’t wait to dig in!
Leah Williams is back in the quaint town of Heritage, Michigan, and ready to try again to make her business a success. But blank slates are hard to come by, and a piece of her past is waiting for her there. Heir to the Heritage Fruits company, Jonathan Kensington is the guy who not only made Leah’s past difficult, he also seems determined to complicate her present as well.
Jon is trying to prove to the Heritage Fruits board that he, not his manipulative uncle, should be running the business. The board insists Jon find a new owner for the building that will house Leah’s business. To avoid forcing a buyout of Leah’s part of the building, Jon strikes a compromise with Leah, and the two go into business together. With her vision and his know-how, it might work. And Leah might realize he’s loved her since high school. If only he didn’t keep on shooting himself in the foot by boxing her out of important decisions.
Sparks fly in this romantic story of two people who must learn to trust both each other and the one who called them to this journey.
