Ten Gifts For the Writer in Your Life (Including Yourself)

by Patricia Bradley, @PTBradley1

Christmas is almost here! Here’s a list of ten things most writers would love to have for Christmas!

  1. Craft books: Some of my favorites are Susan May Warren’s The Story Equation, James Scott Bell’s Plot and Structure,  or Super Structure or How To Write Dazzling Dialogue, Randy Ingermanson’s How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method – there are many more, just make a list and hand it to your gift-giver.
  2. The Writer’s Brainstorming Kit – Whoever thought this up was a genius! It is all about coming up with fresh ideas and plots. It gives you the tools to jump the ruts and take flight in new, unexpected directions.
  3. Aqua Notes – Another genius idea. I get some of my best ideas in the shower and have you ever been here? Don’t forget, don’t forget! Rats, I forgot! With this little handy-dandy tool you can jot that idea down while you’re still in the shower!
  4. The Space Age Pen: I don’t have this one but it’s definitely going on my wish list! Have you ever been here? You’re just about to fall asleep and you have this BRILLIANT idea. You don’t want to get out of bed or sit up, even and you think you’ll remember it in the morning…No. By morning you don’t have a clue what it was. This pen will write upside down, sideways—any angle.
  5. A subscription to Writer’s Digest or the Writer. Valuable tips in both of these magazines!

  1. A keychain (or something similar) with your latest book cover on it!
  2. Yoga pants. If you are sitting all day, you MUST get up and move around. And you MUST have comfortable pants!
  3. A writing program. Scrivener is my go-to writing program. It has everything I need at my fingertips. Scrivener 3 is much easier to learn than previous versions and you can use it free for 30 times before you have to pay! A tutorial from Gwen Hernandez would also be great!
  4. Pilot Frixion Erasable Pens. I don’t have this one, but I’ve heard it works very well. I want one because so many times I’ve messed up when signing a book. This would be a perfect answer. The pens are on my wish list
  5. An Amazon gift card! Like money, it always fits.

Justice Betrayed

It’s Elvis Week in Memphis, and homicide Detective Rachel Sloan isn’t sure her day could get any stranger when aging Elvis impersonator Vic Vegas asks to see her. But when he produces a photo of her murdered mother with four Elvis impersonators–one of whom had also been murdered soon after the photo was taken–she’s forced to reevaluate. Is there some connection between the two unsolved cases? And could the recent break-in at Vic’s home be tied to his obsession with finding his friend’s killer?

When yet another person in the photo is murdered, Rachel suddenly has her hands full investigating three cases. Lieutenant Boone Callahan offers his help, but their checkered romantic past threatens to get in the way. Can they solve the cases before the murderer makes Rachel victim number four?
