I love quotes. I’m always on the lookout for interesting, fun quotes or new-to-me quotes to add to my collection or to post on social media. Today, I’m sharing five writing quotes I discovered recently that inspired me. Each one made me sit back and think, “Huh. I could apply what this person said to my writing and be a better writer.”
Read through the quotes below. I hope one of them sparks something in your creative heart and spurs you on, wherever you are on the writing road.
“Write freely and as rapidly as possible and throw the whole thing on the paper.”
John Steinbeck, American writer.
“Coming up with ideas is the easiest thing on earth. Putting them down is the hardest.”
Rod Serling, American screenwriter
“Don’t try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say.”
Barbara Kingsolver, American novelist
“My philosophy on writing books is that if you learn only one new thing, or even get a new take on something you already know, it’s worth it.”
James Scott Bell, author & writing instructor
“Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but it should finish in the reader’s.”
Stephen King, American author

I disagree with Serling. Coming up with ideas is hard for me, but once I have one, I can run with it. The quote that most resonates with me right now is Kingsolver’s, because I’ve been wondering if I should be jumping from historical novels to romance… to force my work into a formulaic mold to improve my chances in the market.
I really like the one from Kingsolver! Thank you for sharing.
