Fall Reading

Fill up the Well with Fall Reading

I love digging into some good reading each fall and “filling up my well.” I think we writers not only need to be inundated with stories, but we also need to explore new ways of communicating those stories. I think there is no better way to do that than to read a lot — and across genres.

Here are a few novels I’m reading this fall…

It by Stephen King. Okay, I need to explain this one as I’m very visual and get scared easily… My daughter thoroughly enjoyed this book — all 1151 pages — and challenged me to read it. The only King book I have ever read is On Writing and that was wonderful. But I expect there are reasons as to why he’s considered the King — no pun intended — of horror. So I’m planning to open the pages of this novel and begin. That said, I may only get to page 5. And my daughter said that’s okay.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. I have never read a Morton novel and I have heard only good things about them. I asked on Instagram which should be my first and this one won. So I will begin this soon and I am really looking forward to it.
Wunderland by Jennifer Cody Epstein. This is a split-time novel between 1980s New York and 1930s Berlin about a woman and her estranged mother, who has just died. It is a novel of broken lives and bad decisions, I gather. Interesting…
C. S. Lewis for the Third Millennium by Peter Kreeft. I have read Kreeft before and really like his thinking and writing. And I adore C. S. Lewis. I’m very interested to see what Kreeft has to say about Lewis’s continuing relevance.
These are just a few of the books I will read this fall. There will be others — there always are. But I do like to have a plan of a few new books that bring different ideas, writing styles, and interests to the table, so to speak. It helps me stretch my thinking, my craft, and it’s simply fun!
Happy Reading.
