And then there was paint…

So, our home remodel is moving along.

I know, right? Big transformation, and right now the tile guys are upstairs installing my bathroom.

But it feels like yesterday that I had sawdust in my hair, (oh wait, that was yesterday!), the house was down to studs and we were staring at a dumpster filled with the walls of our home.

That first night, we stood in the big empty room that would someday be our great room and asked…what did we get ourselves into? Are we enough for this project?

Probably not. But we decided that if we just kept showing up, with a little faith, a touch of vision and a plan, we’d get there. We just had to keep doing the next thing.

Writing a book can feel that way. You jump in with a story and you love the idea, but…well, then you start…and suddenly the characters don’t seem deep enough, or the storyline feels thin, or the scenes aren’t coming together and you think…what have you gotten yourself into? Are you enough for this project?

(And yes, this is where the Christian in me says…yes! Because you’re not in this alone! You plus God always equal enough.) But theology aside, here’s my advice.

Just keep showing up. Just write today’s scene. And then tomorrow’s scene. Keep digging into the story, your character’s wants, wounds fears and lies, and keep asking WHY? Why does this character need to go on this journey now?

One day, you’ll look up and suddenly…you’ll have reached the end of the fast draft. You’ll have the makings of a beautiful story on the page. And it’ll be time for some paint. (aka, editing).

Show up today and just do the next thing. Don’t look to the end, but keep going and have a little faith.

You will get there.

There will be paint.

Your story matters. Go! Write something Brilliant today.
