Play the Premise Game!

Yay, I love games! Especially WORD games. (Monopoly and Risk, not so much)

We’re going to take everything we learned this week, and all the practice we did, and play a game!

Remember on Tuesday I posted three premises for you to guess:

She just wants to prove that she can be a Pulitzer-prize winning writer. He wants to be at the top executive at his ad agency. But when two high achievers are thrown together to achieve their own goals, they just might discover that falling in love is the greatest prize of all.

Answer: How to lose a Guy in 10 days

She gave up on her future, believing her true love dead, and agreed to marry a king. But when her fiancé returns, ready to fight for her, can she believe in love, even when it seems the past has repeated itself? And will he be a man of his word – even beyond the grave?

Answer: The Princess Bride

He believes he can prevent war with his information about a Soviet secret. But what if he’s wrong? What if, in fact, he instead pulls the trigger on World War Three? Just how far will one man’s beliefs take him….and the rest of the world?

Answer: The Hunt for Red October

And our winner is: Cathy M! Yay! She gets a hot of the press copy of Taming Rafe! Thanks to all who played!

So onto the game! (Or assignment, whatever you prefer) ~
Let’s flex our premise muscles!
Pick a popular movie or book and write a premise for it. Here are the rules:
1. You can’t use proper names.
2. You can’t use time periods
3. You can’t use fictional devices (like, an “unsinkable ship” or “a Russian submarine).
4. Focus on: Character goals, Conflict, Theme

Post your premise in the comments and let the guessing begin!

The person with the MOST correct answers will win a $12 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

If you would rather work on your WIP, then here’s your assignment:

Go to MyBookTherapy Voices and give us:

Your 6 steps, and your premise. Let’s learn together!

Have a superb weekend!

  1. She turns to a life of successful houseplant-killing after an old flame publicly accuses her of being a hack and a fraud. Still stinging from the betrayal, she hesitates to help a man who desperately needs not only the talents she’s buried, but also her love. Will her heart be resurrected before another philodendren dies?

  2. Oh man! I only missed one. Congrats Cathy M. Okay here’s one.

He was a lonely remote farmer’s nephew, pining for action in the distant war. She was a fighter, caught on the wrong side. Fate brings them together as neither could ever have expected, but can he truly be her only hope?

  3. He is wealthy, handsome and arrogant, or is he just reserved and deeply rooted in his upbringing? She is a woman of modest means but with a fire in her spirit that leaves no one wondering what she thinks. When their lives cross and society says they are destined to stay apart will they look past their differences and embrace the love that has ignited between them?

  4. I’ll take a tentative stab at Jennifer’s and go for Pride & Prejudice.

I’m playing from the sidelines – I’m opting for posting my ‘6 steps’ list onto a post at Voices with a little plea for help from the good doc and anyone who’ll take a peek. My premise needs help!

  5. Katy’s sounds like Music and Lyrics. Great description. Love the philodendron line. Captures the humor in that movie well. And Camille is right, Pride and Prejudice.

Suzie, you’re amazing. I love reading these posts! I’m learning so much!

  6. Oh geeze…I jumped into dropping my premise on the voices site without reading this and I didn’t follow the rules..ugh…..I suck…:( sorry…..
